The Coach Bob Pittard Scholarship
The Coach Bob Pittard Scholarship Fund invests in Apex, North Carolina high school athletes who are pursuing a full-time undergraduate education leading to a Baccalaureate Degree. This investment is made possible through a Trust Agreement between former Apex High School teacher and coach, Robert Ray Pittard, and WakeEd Partnership.
Robert “Bobby’ Ray Pittard was born October 21, 1934, in the Carpenter community of Wake County. He was a graduate of Apex High School and NC State University and was a veteran of the NC Army National Guard. He started his education career at Moncure High School and eventually retired from Apex High School in 1976 where he was a math and science teacher and a basketball coach.
When he passed away in November 2016, Mr. Pittard left in his will the financial capability and direction to establish a sustainable college scholarship fund for student-athletes in Apex, North Carolina. He entrusted WakeEd Partnership with $2.7 million from his estate to establish and facilitate this program. The first eleven scholarships were awarded to students in 2018.
The Coach Bob Pittard Scholarship Fund is available to those graduating seniors from Apex High School and Green Hope High School, located in Wake County who, during their high school years, earned a varsity letter for participation in a full season in a varsity sport.
NEW FOR 2026-2027
Beginning in the fall semester of 2026, the Bob Pittard Scholarship will move from an application-considered scholarship to an auto-renew scholarship. In other words, those who are selected to be a Bob Pittard Scholarship recipient, will no longer have to re-apply annually for the scholarship, and will instead be guaranteed an annual scholarship of $12,500 (maximum) – as long as you remain enrolled as a full-time student and in good academic standing at your school – for a grand total of $50,000 over a four year period.
What does this mean for current Bob Pittard Scholar recipients? This means that beginning in the 2026/2027 academic school year, you will be grandfathered into this new model, and you will automatically be guaranteed the scholarship at $12,500 on annual basis depending on where you are in your academic journey will determine how much longer you are eligible to auto-renew. For example, if you are a junior at the beginning of the 2026/2027 academic year, you will be guaranteed the $12,500 (annually) for your junior academic year, and then for your senior academic year.
NEW SELECTION PROCESS FOR 2026-2027
The new process for administering the applications will be conducted in a multi-step process. Select administration identified by each high school (Green Hope High School and Apex High School) will be eligible annually to nominate a minimum of five (5) candidates, and a maximum of twelve (12), per school. Those students who are nominated will then be invited to the full application process, conducted online through a privately shared link, which will include essays and resume submissions for consideration. Those submitted applications will be graded through an internal committee, hosted by WakeEd Partnership. Finalist names from each high school will be submitted for consideration from the committee, with a minimum of three (3) finalists per school. A three-judge panel will conduct in-person interviews at each high school, and from there, will select the four recipients – two (2) per school – for the new freshmen cohort, annually.
The criteria for selecting candidates for nomination include:
- Be an enrolled student at either Green Hope High School or Apex High School, during their senior year of high school
- Lettering in at least one varsity-level sport during the students high school career
- Must be considered in “good academic standing” with WCPSS
- Most hold an average GPA of 3.25 or greater
- Must have exhibited leadership both on the field, and off the field
Outside of the aforementioned nomination criteria, schools have the agency to engage additional criteria to help in their selection process
