For nearly seven decades, Ralph Ashworth was one of the most recognizable and respected business leaders in western Wake County. As founder of Ashworth Drugs, he transformed a small downtown pharmacy into a beloved Cary institution that served generations of families while becoming a cornerstone of the community.

From its opening in 1957 until its closing in 2024, Ashworth Drugs was far more than a business. It was a gathering place where neighbors connected, friendships were formed, and customers were treated like family. Through his commitment to service and community, Ralph helped shape Cary during a period of extraordinary growth while maintaining the values and relationships that defined the town’s character.

Alongside his wife, Daphne, Ralph supported numerous civic and charitable causes and helped create lasting traditions that continue to strengthen the community today. Among his most enduring contributions to education was the creation of the Cary Chamber of Commerce’s Honor A Teacher program in 1991. More than three decades later, the program continues to celebrate outstanding educators and highlight the vital role teachers play in the lives of students.

Ralph also invested directly in young people through his business, employing hundreds of local students over the years and providing many with their first job, valuable work experience, and lessons in responsibility, service, and community engagement.

Through his business leadership, community service, and steadfast support of students and educators, Ralph Ashworth leaves a legacy that continues to shape Cary and Wake County. For those contributions, he is inducted into the Wake County Public School System Hall of Fame.
