All Wake County Public School students have a right to become skilled readers. Some students need more support to achieve this. 

The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) has launched a new literacy initiative Level Up Literacy to replace the Wake Together / HELPS 1:1 tutoring program. With HELPS no longer being utilized in the district, Level Up Literacy will be supported by local nonprofit partners Read and Feed and WakeEd Partnership for the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year.   

Read and Feed will train volunteers and provide their literacy program and resources to support students. Tutors will be provided with ongoing literacy training, coaching and support to meet individual student needs and track progress.  

WakeEd Partnership, which has been a key partner since the program’s inception, will continue in its role of recruiting volunteers, community-based organizations and businesses to support Level Up Literacy, as well as focus on the retention and transition of current HELPS-trained literacy volunteers to the new program.

HOW IT WORKS

Anyone can be trained to become a reading tutor. You will be trained in child safety and delivering a reading fluency curriculum used in Wake County Public Schools. No special skills are necessary, however, interest and experience with education and working with children are helpful.

Receive your school assignment and begin tutoring! Tutors work with 1st – 3rd grade students one-on-one for at least one hour per week.
