Investor Spotlight: UNC REX Healthcare

UNC REX colleagues take great pride in supporting initiatives and health services that make a positive impact on our neighbors. Through UNC REX Cares corporate social responsibility program, co-workers are connected to meaningful volunteer opportunities throughout Wake County such as the WakeEd Partners Read program.

Co-workers at UNC REX are encouraged to be active participants in our collective future by engaging in dialogue, serving on action-oriented teams and representing the organization as ambassadors in the community. This commitment to share resources and knowledge made Partners Read an excellent fit.

Each Friday, UNC REX co-workers volunteer their time to read for 30 minutes with struggling 1^st grade readers. This special one-on-one support helps build each child’s confidence, improve their reading skills and promote a love of reading. 

“Reading opens doors to brighter futures, so one must start early,” UNC REX Cancer Center’s Latanja Avery. “I enjoy watching the kids as they rush in the media center to read another ‘new book.’ Their smiles are priceless. My heart is full of joy as well knowing that I can do something so small as volunteering to read to the children.”

“Reading on Friday mornings is the bright spot of my week,” said UNC REX Vice President Roy Tempke. “I always leave with perspective, being reminded how simple it can be to make a child happy. I cannot think of a better way to use 30 minutes of my time, than reading a book with a child that they choose and can keep.  I think that I benefit more than the kids.”
